11th Diabetes Awareness Walk 2008
Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology organized it’s 11th Diabetes Awareness Walk on Sunday, the 16th of November, 2008 at Boat Basin, Clifton, Karachi.

More than 2000 people of all ages and from all walks of life, including leading physicians, doctors, people with diabetes, their families, representatives from media and press, and general public, participated in the event.

The purpose of the walk was to create awareness in the people at large, regarding diabetes, its prevention and management and to stress the importance and need of regular physical activity and exercise.

The walk was inaugurated by Prof F.U Baqai, The Chancellor of Baqai Medical University and Prof Abdul Samad Shera, Honorary Preident International Diabetes Federation and Secretary General Pakistan Diabtes Association. Professor. Lt. General (Rtd) Syed Azhar Ahmed , Vice Chancellor of Baqai Medical University and Prof Zaman sheikh, Director, National Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology, Dow University of Health Sciences ,also graced the occasion with their presence and addressed the audience.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Abdul Basit, Director, Baqai Institute of Diabetology & Endocrinology told the participants that the institute is strongly determined to improve diabetes care in Pakistan and it is working vigorously for the prevention of diabetes in the country. In this regard “National Diabetes & Diabetic Foot Programme” has been launched with the collaboration of World Diabetes Foundation. with an aim to create awareness regarding diabetes, to initiate the prevention of diabetes and to improve the diabetes care and the diabetic foot care in Pakistan.

Prof Abdul Samad Shera, addressing the gathering expressed his concern that the rising incidence of diabetes has created an alarming situation worldwide. Pakistan is one of the countries having the highest number of diabetics and facing an epidemic of diabetes. According to World Health Organization estimates, there are presently more than 7 million Diabetics in Pakistan and this number will increase to 16 million by 2025. Another 6 million or more are suffering from Impaired Glucose Tolerance which means they are at high risk of developing diabetes. This ranks country 8th in the world as far as the number of the diabetics is concerned and according to WHO estimation, Pakistan will be placed 4th in this regard, by the year 2025. These figures make diabetes an epidemic and call for an immediate action.

Prof F.U Baqai, advised the people that change in the life style from sedentary to more active with regular physical exercise and taking a balanced diet rather than the high calorie fatty and sugary diet, can prevent diabetes in a large proportion of people.

A number of stalls had been installed at the starting point of the walk where literature and verbal information about diabetes, it’s prevention and management was provided. Moreover, free blood-sugar tests were performed, for the participants.

This auspicious event was organized by the “Walk Organizing Committee” comprising of Dr. Asmat Nawaz ( The Chief Organizer), Dr. Zahid Miyan, Dr. Zafar Iqbal Abbasi, , Miss. Mehwish Riaz. Almost all the members of BIDE team actively contributed in organizing the event.
